Tim Bray Theatre Company, based in Takapuna, Auckland, has published a freely available e-book called “Sensory Relaxed Performances for Children”.
The handbook is written by Katie Querin, who is an autistic person, and records the Company's unique processes and learnings as they've developed sensory relaxed shows, led by Katie and in close collaboration with their community.
Sensory relaxed performances create a less formal, more supportive atmosphere in the theatre. The show softens some technical elements and offers support materials which aim to enable all people to enjoy a comfortable and inclusive theatre experience.
The shows may be especially welcomed by autistic and neurodivergent people and those with sensory, movement, communication, and learning needs.
It is hoped the resource will help others to learn about creating a sensory relaxed environment and to put on their own sensory relaxed shows creating more accessible theatre throughout Aotearoa.
